Types of Lubricants

There are three general types of intimate lubricants: silicone based, water based, and hybrids. Silicone lubricants contain only silicones, no water. They are the longest-lasting, providing extended glide, do not dry-out and are also water-resistant. They are not absorbed by skin or mucous membranes. This makes them ideal for longer sexual sessions, for use in water such as the pool since they do not readily rinse away, and when there is no production of natural lubrication. They have a more concentrated texture.

Water based lubricants contain little or no silicone. They have a lighter, wetter feel than silicone based lubricants due to added humectants and are ideal for enhancing natural lubrication, safe for use with all toy materials, and easily wash from skin or fabrics. Water-based lubricants can range from easy to pour liquid to a more concentrated gel consistency and are relatively long-lasting.

Hybrid lubricants are a blend of water, clear or cream emulsifiers, and silicone. Hybrids are ideal to enhance natural lubrication, are longer lasting than water based formulas, and have a uniquely soft, velvety feel. They easily wash from skin and fabrics, are safe for most toys, and can also be used for light massage.
